North Thompson Oxbows Jensen Island Park

This 30 ha (74 acre) park was created to protect a U-shaped portion (or Oxbow) of the North Thompson River. The area is an important habitat for various waterfowl as well as beaver and otters. As the area is covered with water for approximately four months a year, there are no facilities offered.

Cathedral Provincial Park

This 33,000-hectare (82,000 acre) wilderness area in the Okanagan mountain range borders Washington and contains rock formations with names like Stone City, Devil's Woodpile and Smokey the Bear, as well as the turqoise Cathedral Lakes. Watch for mule deer, mountain goat and California bighorn sheep. Camping, hiking trails, picnic area, angling are all popular activities. Cathedral Lakes Lodge is also located here. Waterfront Park

Located in the city centre on Water Street, The Waterfront Park is next to The Grand Hotel. Winding along the lakeshore, this park has a broad boardwalk that meanders along the waters edge to the City Park. Perfectly landscaped gardens, statues and plenty of city views await visitors.

Roche Lake Provincial Park

Roche Lake Provincial Park contains seven lakes that are known for being good spots to fish for rainbow trout. The park is suitable for a range of other activities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. The park includes three small and basic campsites with pit toilets and picnic tables.

Mabel Lake Provincial Park

Mabel Lake Provincial Park is worth the 60km (37mi) drive from Vernon with a pristine lake and towering mountains. Off the main road, this park is usually quiet but is complete with many amenities including, but not limited to, camping (with bathrooms and running water), playground, swimming, boat launch, biking and hiking trails. The area teems with wildlife, from birds to deer (and sometimes bears), and offers great rainbow trout fishing.

The Grist Mill and Gardens

This area boasts a restored grist mill from the 19th century. There are also 11 campsites with water and electrical hookups. The gardens hosts a number of events throughout the year including a Farmer's Market on Sundays from 9am - 1pm, and a brunch from 10am - 2pm. Admission fees: $7 Adult, $6 Senior, $5 Youth, $3 Child. The summer house is open seven days a week from 9am - 5pm.

Vaseux Lake Provincial Park is home to a wide range of bird and animal species including trumpeter swans, wood ducks, blue-winged teal, beavers, cottontail rabbits, deer and turtles. Fishing and ice-fishing in Vaseux Lake is very good due to populations of largemouth bass and rainbow trout.

Named after a group of six basalt columns that formed over 30 million years ago and are fused together to make a steep cliff, Keremeo Columns Provincial Park is located in the Similkameen Valley. Holiday athletes and wildlife observers now replace the early homesteaders, trappers and prospectors who once used this land. Visit the many volcanoes, waterfalls, mineral springs and glaciers. Hiking for every ability and excellent birding; boating, canoeing and kayaking on the rivers and lakes. Guiding businesses offer horseback riding, river rafting and fishing. Four campgounds. Established in 1996, Oregon Jack Provincial Park has long been an important area for First Nations use. Historically used for native ceremonies, the park is scattered with rock pictographs and culturally modified trees. When examining the pictographs it is important not to touch them directly, as oils from a human hand can cause the accelerated deterioration of the original colours.

Open year-round, Sun-Oka Beach Provincial Park boasts an impressive sandy beach that stretches over 0.5 km (0.3 mi). Popular activities include swimming, boating and jet-skiing.

Anstey-Hunakwa Provincial Park offers visitors a variety of landscapes in a more secluded section of the Shuswap area. Old-growth forests surround two lakes that cannot be reached by road, a rarity for the area. The sandy beaches and flourishing salmon habitat attract recreational enthusiasts while the peaceful setting attracts nature lovers. Wilderness camping is permitted within the park.

Dunn Peak Protected Area

With 19,353 hectares of wilderness, this protected area features splendid scenery and fantastic backcountry recreational opportunities. Alpine areas such as Matterhorn Peak, which reaches an elevation of 2,634 m, are perfect for ski touring. Note there are no day use facilities. The park is located 90 km north of Kamloops, near Little Fort.

Cascade Recreation Area is located within the Hozameen Range of the Cascade Mountains. This area has seen minimal development over the years and remains an important habitat for wolverines, grizzlies and mountain beavers. Recreational opportunities include hiking, horseback riding and nature appreciation. Snowmobiling is popular during the winter.

Harbour Dudgeon Lakes Provincial Park encompasses 65 ha (160.6 acres) of territory that includes wetlands, forest and a number of lakes. The park is an important habitat for moose and caribou. There are no camping or day-use facilities in the park.

Elephant Hill Provincial Park

Some of the driest conditions in British Columbia can be experienced at Elephant Hill Provincial Park. The natural dry grassland area provides shelter for western rattlesnakes, gopher snakes and sharp-tailed grouse, along with coyotes, mule deer and a variety of bird species. No facilities are provided.

Woodhaven Nature Conservancy

The Woodhaven Nature Conservancy is 21 acres (8.7 hectares) and contains three distinct ecosystems and a historical irrigation flume. The three biogeoclimatic zones are the dry interior zone to the North, the wet interior zone to the West, and an old creek area to the South. Within the creek zone Saskatoon berries, False Solomon's-seal and a thick undergrowth for wildlife seeking shelter can be found. In the wet region are Black Cottonwood, Western Red Cedar, firs, Sarsaparilla and Hooker's Fairybells. In the dry zone there is cactus, Ponderosa Pine, Balsam Root and Penstemon. Open during daylight year round, the conservancy offers interpretive tours for groups.

Walloper Lake Provincial Park

Walloper Lake Provincial Park is located just off the Coquihalla Highway, 37 km (23 mi) outside of Kamloops. The lake itself is small but does attract anglers, canoeists and kayakers. The park is day-use only and no overnight camping is permitted.

McConnell Lake is located 35 km (22 mi) from Kamloops and offers excellent opportunities to catch rainbow trout. Aside from fishing, visitors can hike the park's primitive trail, canoe or kayak on the lake's surface or photograph the wildlife.

Painted Bluffs Provincial Park

This park gets it name from the distinctive rocks and soils found in the area. These multi-coloured rocks form a muted rainbow of natural colour, witnessed both from the park itself or from viewpoints along Kamloops Lake. No facilities are available at this park.

This 98 ha park is extremely popular throughout the year and especially so in summer due to it's location on the western side of Lake Okanagan. Visitors can sunbathe, swim, boat, water-ski and windsurf, and there are two campgrounds in the park but campers should be aware that the park gets very busy during tourist season.

This calming 15-acre garden features perennial and annual flowers, mature trees, shrubs, flowing lawns and a water wise Xeriscape demonstration garden and grasslands meadow. Picnic areas and spectacular views of the Kettle Valley Railroad's Trout Creek Canyon Trestle and Okanagan Lake. The Friends of the Gardens non-profit
society suggests a $3 donation per person to help maintain and improve

Camping is not permitted at the park.

Arrowstone Provincial Park

The Arrowstone Provincial Park is a 6,200-hectare park located northeast of Cache Creek. Situated in the Thompson River Basin, the park protects one of the largest undisturbed watersheds in the southern interior of B.C. The park is surrounded by forests that act as a winter home for many migratory animals. Archaeological digs, centred in the southwest area of the park, have uncovered native artifacts, confirming their use of the park many years ago. The park is totally unserviced and does not offer clean running water, so campers and day hikers are required to be self-sufficient.

The park features over 10 km of hiking trails.

Adams Lake Provincial Park is located on the south-western shore of Adams Lake. The park spans over 56 hectares and is surrounded by forests. Popular activities include cycling, hiking, swimming and canoeing. Only 32 campsites, suitable for tent and small vehicles, are offered with only basic services (pit toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, fire wood and non-drinkable water). Camping fees are collected. The park's operating season is May 15th to September 15th, but it can be accessed throughout the year.

Bedard Aspen Provincial Park is located 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Cache Creek. The 173-hectare park protects an environmentally sensitive area with high biological diversity. Bearded Lake is located within the park. Many species of wildlife make their home here and wildlife viewing is likely. Wilderness Camping is permitted by trail access, but no facilities are provided, including clean drinking water.

The 360 hectare Fintry Provincial Park is located on the west side of okanagan Lake. The area was once an important transportation hub of the valley and remenants of this history are intact, such as a ferry wharf a preserved Manor House, caretakers house and a handful of barns. Besides this unique heritage, the park sustains two distict ecosystems. Beaches, waterfalls, lakes and grassy areas create ample opportunity for hiking, fishing swimming, biking, boating and plenty of snapshot opportunities, to name a few.

One of BC's newest grassland parks, Lac du Bois Grasslands features sweeping grassland, quiet lakes, untouched forests and secret ponds. The park is notable due to its complex geology, and this variety is not lost on the park's wildlife species. Bighorn sheep, moose and waterfowl sightings are common, while western rattlesnakes and sharp-tailed grouse do their best to live more secretive lives within the park.

Haynes Point Provincial Park

Located in the Okanagan Valley on Osoyoos Lake, Haynes Point Provincial Park boasts a hot and dry climate. The lake is very warm and so is popular for swimming, waterskiing, jet-skiing and windsurfing. Visitors can also fish, and bird-watchers will be interested to know that the park is home to Canada's smallest bird, the calliope hummingbird.

Bear Creek Provincial Park

Bear Creek Provincial Park is located only 15 minutes from downtown Kelowna. Over 122 RV-friendly and paved access is available within the park. In the open hills behind the campsite, over 23 km (14 mi) of trails and 10 km (6 mi) of easy walking trails are waiting for exploration. Covered in forests, this park offers plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities. Because of the prickly pear cacti that grows in parts of the park, good footwear is required. Visitors are asked to please stay on the designated paths in the park. Lakeside camping is available and guests can bask in the sunshine on the beaches and enjoy water sports in Lake Okanagan.

Although there are no camping or day use facilities, the park is visited by photographers and nature lovers alike due to the colourful explosion of wildflowers in July and August. Wilderness hiking and hang-gliding are also permitted.

Mara Provincial Park is a great day excursion for travellers as well as local residents. Picnicking, boating and swimming are all popular activities in the park. There is a boat launch, but boats may not be moored overnight. There are no overnight camping facilities.

Kalamalka Lake and Provincial Park

The provincial park surrounding Kalamalka Lake is a treasure of trove of outdoor activities that typify the Okanagan's popularity, from watersports to camping, birdwathing to cross-country skiing. Ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir abound in the area, and wildflowers bring a profusion of colour to the otherwise green and brown environment. There are nature trails throughout. Boating, fishing, waterskiing are all permitted in this park, but regulations should be verified beforehand.

Gardom Lake and Regional Park

This quiet little lake is an excellent location for families, paddling and fishing. The Gardom Lake Regional Park provides day use facilities including several floating docks, diving board, picnic tables, playground and outhouses. Pets and fires are not permitted in the park. A small island on the lake offer paddlers an excellent opportunity to view the Painted Turtles as well as enjoy interpretive trails. The lake is heavily stocked with both Rainbow and Eastern Brook trout. Motorboats are restricted to ten horse power motors.

This park covers 500 ha (1235.5 acres) and protects an area covered with old-growth forest, floodplains, wetlands, beaver ponds and oxbow lakes. While there are no day-use facilities in the park, fishing and wildlife viewing are still popular activities.

Stein Valley Nlaka'pamux Heritage Provincial Park

The Stein Valley area is a spiritual sanctuary for aboriginal people. There are petroglyphs and pictographs to be found and the area is the last unlogged valley in southwestern British Columbia. The Stein Valley Nlaka'pamux Heritage Park is a First Nations land reserve and an official Heritage site jointly managed by the British Columbia government and the Lytton Indian Band. The Stein Heritage Trail is available for hikers but there are no services and they must be self-reliant. The hike is not recommended for children.

The South Okanagan Grasslands protected area encompasses four sites: Mt Kobau, Kilpoola, Chopaka East and Chopaka West, for a total of 9,364 hectares. The park protects one of the most endangered ecological sites in Canada, featuring a number of rare and endangered plants, animals, birds and reptiles unique to the hot, semi-desert climate. The park offers hiking opportunities, horseback riding, domestic animals and more. Fishing and hunting are also permitted with the appropriate licenses and during the right time of year.

The Grassland Trail and the Naturescape Gardens allow visitors to explore outdoors and learn about, and perhaps see, the endangered animals and plants in the Okanagan. Banana Island Provincial Park

This 10-hectare park, located 35 km (22 mi) east of Kamloops can only be accessed by kayak or canoe. This long and narrow island is environmentally sensitive and therefore the park cannot be used for recreational purposes, other than wildlife viewing and photographing from a boat. The park protects spring salmon spawning grounds and a variety of endangered birds and waterfowl who nest here. Evidence of Native habitation exists with the parks kekuli pits (semi-underground pit-houses).

High Lakes Basin Provincial Park

Located on the Nehalliston Plateau, High Lakes Basin Provincial Park is spread over 560 ha (1383.8 acres) and includes a chain of lakes that are good for fishing. Kayaking, hiking and wilderness camping are also permitted but no facilities are provided so visitors must bring in and take out all supplies.

These make for excellent climbing and hiking due to the effects of errosion to create such sights as Chimmney Rock and Limestone Canyon. 40km northwest of Cache Creek near Lillooet.

Herald Provincial Park is located along the western shore of the Salmon Arm of Shuswap Lake. With a 119-site campground, boat launch and a large day-use area, the park is able to accomodate all sorts of visitors. It is a popular base camp for visiting the rest of the Shuswap as well as offering opportunities for hiking, water-skiing, scuba diving and a variety of other water sports.
