British Columbia's Thompson Okanagan
is renowned for its moderate climate and stunning mountain, lake, and desert
terrain. The region is also famous for its abundance of freshly-grown fruit—few
travellers that venture along these highways can resist the allure of a sweet,
juicy Okanagan peach. Grapes are another hot commodity—Kelowna,
Vernon and Penticton
together have over 50 vineyards and wineries that produce some of the Canada's
finest wines. Renting a houseboat on the Shuswap Lakes is an extremely popular
activity, with Sicamous being
the self-proclaimed Houseboat Capital of Canada. There are music festivals throughout
the year, including the Merritt
Mountain Music Festival in July and Salmon
Arm's Roots
and Blues Festival in August. The desert surrounding Osoyoos
is celebrated at the Nk'Mip
Desert & Heritage Centre. In winter, several ski resorts in the Okanagan
offer world-class skiing and snowboarding, plus a variety of other snow sports.
Farther north is Clearwater,
located at the entrance to Wells
Gray Provincial Park.
